Nottinghamshire Ramblers

Welcome to the Nottinghamshire Area Website of The Ramblers

Secret Life Of A Rambler - Keith Wallace, Nottinghamshire Area Ramblers Chair

Keith currently spends most of his time volunteering for the Ramblers but he is also a Governor for Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust. In the past, he was a factory supervisor for most of his working life but also worked for LTSB and has been a barman and a bus conductor. For many years, he was involved in amateur dramatics and had a couple of years trying to earn a living from acting. He has a first class honours degree and a PGCE.

Why did you join Ramblers?
I've always enjoyed walking but always walked alone. When I took early retirement, I decided to start exploring a little further afield than my usual stomping grounds so the Ramblers seemed a good way to find new places to walk.kwallacesecretlifephoto2

How long have you been a member?
8 years.

What is your most memorable walk?
A walk/scramble up Crowden Clough and on to Kinder Scout. Aged 60, it was the first time I had been on to Kinder Scout and the weather was superb. There's a cover picture of me at the top of Crowden Clough on my Facebook page looking very pleased with myself.

Where is your favourite walking destination?
On the moors above Hope Valley. I get out there whenever I can.

Have you ever got lost on a walk?
Of course! But never when I'm leading, though. When I first started leading walks for the Ramblers, I used to get lost quite frequently when out on recces but that doesn't happen very often these days. Probably a good job as I now lead around 50 walks a year for Mansfield & Sherwood Ramblers plus walks for Walking for Health and other Groups.

What is your most treasured piece of walking kit?
My Boots. Without them there simply isn't any walking!

Who would be your ideal walking companion?
Good question. Funnily enough, I only ever used to walk alone before I joined the Ramblers. Now, I treasure those few chances that I get when I'm not doing a recce with someone, or leading a walk, to get out and walk on my own.

How do you relax?
Watching Opera, Ballet and Theatre but I don't get as much as I would like. By the time people get to read this, I will have spent a week at the Royal Centre, Nottingham watching Opera North's version of Wagner's Ring Cycle – an event for which I bought tickets over a year ago!

What is your favourite meal?
Curry. One of my indulgent pleasures is to cook curry from scratch, preparing my own spices mix, etc.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?
I watch almost no television and yet I am completely hooked on The Good Wife. I have watched every single episode of every series since it started. I usually catch up episodes on ALL4 as I rarely get up-to-date enough to watch it aired at its scheduled time.

What music would you like played at your funeral?
Vaughan Williams – The Lark Ascending as my body is buried in a cardboard box under a newly-planted tree.

Sum up your personality in three words
Resilient – good-humoured – generous
